Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Apple.

Stacy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a writer by trade, and a photographer by proxy. Trained as a Journalist in the US Air Force, I wrote, interviewed, and photographed my way into a full-fledged obsession. When telling the stories of our military personnel, a routine week was anything but ordinary. A single mother is deployed to a war zone, a team of 19-year old Airmen successfully launch a satellite into orbit; protestors attempt to breach the gates of an installation; the crushing news of a loved one lost.

After leaving the military, I found myself swept away in the world of traditional media, working my way through assignments in print, radio, TV, and cable. Today, my story is that of a mom who shed corporate stresses to live a fun, family-filled life with passion and no regrets. Now, I get to live the exciting life of a documentarian – freezing the moments in life we want to remember and helping to embrace moments of change. My career since the USAF has afforded me a circle of accomplished friends, who generously share their time and working knowledge of photography. Getting reacquainted with my passion has been an exciting and humbling journey.

Has it been a smooth road?
Transitioning from military to corporate America was an easy jump. However, the switch from corporate overachiever to mompreneur was incredibly difficult. Finding a balance between work and home life has been the biggest challenge – there’s no 5:30 pm, no after work happy hours, or Sunday Fundays to unwind with friends. Days bleed into weeks, there simply aren’t enough hours in a day, and “me-time” is a running joke.

But, it’s empowering, it makes you a better friend to the ones who stick around… it’s like explaining what it’s like to have children to someone who doesn’t have them. There are no words to describe the pit in my stomach when I release a gallery to a client and wait for feedback; equally, there are no words to describe the feeling I get when my work is returned on greeting cards, announcements, and invitations.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Digital and technological advancements have brought the art of photography to the masses. The days of mixing darkroom chemicals and spending endless hours with a loop, a light table and a pile of negatives are gone. As sad as it is or those of us who nostalgically remember the smell of developing your own film, it’s exciting for so many other reasons.

For me, the most exciting advancement digital photography has introduced is the Lifestyle Session – there’s no need to choose just one photo anymore, you can have them all. That’s what we specialize in, all of the moments in a session. Sometimes the fleeting moments between the posed smiles create the most treasured memories. Our philosophy is to create a fun, interactive environment, where the pressure of posing and smiling for the camera is eliminated. We want our clients to smile every time they see their photos, we want them to remember the experience with nostalgia.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I know numerous photographers who are intimidated by the competition in our area, but I see it differently. We are incredibly blessed to live and work in the DFW metroplex, where jobs are plentiful and the cost of living is manageable. I feel like entrepreneurs should look at healthy competition as a sign that our area is ripe for starting a new business. I know they will find the community welcoming and supportive.
